😍 DUCK IS BOYFRIEND / BEST FRIEND MATERIAL!
Somewhere along the way, somebody accidentally created puppy with the emotional availability of a devoted husband, the intelligence of an honors student, the enthusiasm of a cruise director, and ears that appear to be receiving transmissions from multiple dimensions.
His name is Duck.
And before you ask, yes, he’s a dog.
No, I don’t know why his name is Duck. But it really does fit him.
What I do know is that if you spend approximately seventeen seconds with him, you’ll start referring to him as “my boyfriend” too.
Because that’s what happened to me.
💜 Meet Duck
Duck is a six-month-old, 34-pound tricolor Australian Shepherd mix who somehow looks like he was assembled from all the best parts in the puppy factory.
His coat is a gorgeous patchwork of glossy black, bright white, and warm caramel markings that make him look permanently photo-ready. His snowy white chest and belly practically beg for belly rubs, and trust me, Duck fully supports this agenda.
Then there are the ears.
The ears deserve their own chapter.
One moment they’re standing straight up like a tiny executive attending an important board meeting. The next they’re flopped sideways like he just received surprising news. Sometimes they’re both up. Sometimes they’re both down. Sometimes they’re engaged in entirely separate conversations.
Honestly, those ears are less of a body part and more of a mood ring.
And paired with those soulful brown eyes?
Game over.
🛋️ The World’s Most Affectionate Shadow
Some dogs enjoy affection.
Duck has turned affection into a full-time profession.
This boy wants to be wherever his family is, doing whatever they’re doing, preferably while touching at least one member of the household.
If you’re sitting on the couch, Duck would like to sit with you.
If you’re laying in bed, Duck would like to lay against you.
If you’re walking to another room, Duck would appreciate an invitation but will likely follow regardless because clearly you’re heading somewhere important and he doesn’t want to miss out.
His foster mom describes him as a Velcro dog, and honestly, that’s putting it mildly.
Duck loves with his entire body.
He leans into people. He paws gently for attention. He comes running when his favorite humans enter a room. He sprawls across beds and couches with the confidence of someone who pays the mortgage.
And at night?
He rotates sleeping partners.
Human. Dog. Human again.
Like a tiny relationship manager making sure everyone feels included.
🎾 Professional Wrestler. Amateur Lap Dog.
Duck is what happens when someone combines “active adventure buddy” with “couch potato cuddle enthusiast” and shakes vigorously.
He absolutely loves playing with other dogs. Chasing, wrestling, running, zooming, and generally treating the backyard like his personal Olympic training facility are among his favorite hobbies.
But once the fun is over?
He’s perfectly happy curling up on the couch beside his people and watching television.
Yes.
Watching television.
Not just existing in the same room as the television.
Watching it.
If a dog barks on TV, Duck will bark back.
If a woman sounds distressed on a show, Duck feels obligated to intervene.
Apparently he has appointed himself Director of Television Security.
No paycheck required.
🧠 Smart Enough To Be Slightly Concerning
Australian Shepherds are known for their intelligence.
Duck appears determined to uphold that reputation.
Puzzle feeders?
Easy.
Snuffle mats?
No problem.
Food-based enrichment?
Solved immediately.
Hide treats in the grass, a ball pit, or a puzzle toy and Duck rises to the challenge like he’s competing for a scholarship.
His foster mom notes that he figures things out very quickly, especially if snacks are involved.
Which is probably why he’s already learned “sit” beautifully, comes when called, walks nicely on leash, rides well in the car, and is enthusiastically working on additional skills.
The good news is that training Duck is fun.
The other news is that Duck occasionally uses his intelligence for personal projects.
For example:
Forget to push your chair in?
Duck may conduct a surprise table inspection.
Need someone to monitor meal preparation?
Duck has volunteered.
Without being asked.
🐾 Friends, Family & Everybody Else
Duck genuinely enjoys being part of a group.
He has done wonderfully with other dogs, especially when it comes to playtime and wrestling sessions. He shares toys, enjoys enrichment activities alongside other dogs, and thrives on companionship.
He has done well with men, women, older adults, and older children.
While he could likely be successful as an only dog with an engaged family, his foster mom feels he would absolutely love having a canine sibling to play with and share life with.
At his core, Duck simply wants connection.
Whether that’s with a person, another dog, or ideally, both.
He wants to belong.
🌎 Growing Up & Learning the World
Like any six-month-old puppy, Duck is still figuring some things out.
His nighttime potty habits are excellent. He sleeps in bed and reliably wakes his foster mom when he needs to go outside.
During the day, he’s still learning to remember that outside is the preferred bathroom location and benefits from reminders and consistency.
He’s also working on learning a doggie door and adding new commands to his growing resume.
The wonderful thing about Duck is that he approaches learning with enthusiasm.
He’s eager to please.
He’s highly food motivated.
And he genuinely wants to get it right.
🏡 Duck’s Dream Home
Duck’s perfect family is one that views their dog as an actual member of the family.
He wants adventures.
He wants couch time.
He wants movie nights.
He wants backyard play sessions.
He wants to be included in life’s ordinary moments because those ordinary moments are his favorite things.
A home with another playful dog would be wonderful for him, but the biggest requirement is people who enjoy having a devoted companion by their side.
Because Duck isn’t looking for somewhere to live.
He’s looking for his people.
💜 The Heart of Duck
Look into Duck’s eyes for more than a moment and you’ll see it.
The happiness.
The curiosity.
The little spark of mischief.
But mostly?
The love.
Duck is the kind of dog who makes every room feel friendlier simply because he’s in it.
He’s the dog who races over when you walk through the door.
The dog who insists on touching you while he sleeps.
The dog who flops dramatically onto his back because surely someone nearby would enjoy rubbing his fuzzy white belly.
He’s joyful.
He’s affectionate.
He’s ridiculously charming.
And somewhere out there is a family that’s about to discover what his foster mom already knows:
Life is simply better when Duck is in it. 💜
KNOWN HISTORY:
Duck is the victic of divorce. Bought as a young pup, and then had to be given away during a divorce where he wasn’t welcome in the new home. We intercepted Duck before he was taken to the animal shelter, and promised him that we would find him a home as happy and loving as he is.
